Lifestyle of the 1930's?

Imagine living without enough to eat, too little heat, everyone else is trying to get what little there is. My father was born on a farm in 1926 and remembers people coming to get food from the fields that was too small for them to pick. Desperation is something most Americans have a hard time grasping, Look at tv shows of poor countries, maybe that will give you some insight.
