What is the word for singing softly?

A friend of mine asked me one day why I was singing in [this word]. It presumably means "deliberately singing with much less power that is otherwise necessary to sing a curtain song", in other words, singing the same notes but with like no volume. Not conventional singing at all. What the hell is this word?
