Why do people really judge you on skin color...is it really that serious?

Im in a society where im at the bottom of the chain i guess. Even within my own race, dark skin women are not "preferred" its quite saddening, worse, my bf also prefers lighter skin women, which of course i didnt know until i was deep in love.......just someone explain to me how people really can be this mean?
